With the swine flu now holding the potential for a worldwide pandemic, there is perhaps no one more worried about getting sick than women who are pregnant.

This is particularly true for those of you over 35 who may already be struggling with fertility issues – or maybe undergoing fertility treatments right now.

The good news is that pregnancy doesn’t necessarily increase your risk for getting the swine flu – or any other type of flu. However, it is important to note that if you do get the flu while you are pregnant, studies show you are up to five times more likely to suffer serious complications – such as pneumonia. And that is often where most of the flu fatalities lie.

In terms of risks to your baby, the greatest threat from illnesses such as the flu occur from high fevers in the mother during pregnancy. Sustained body temperature over 101 degrees, and particularly over 102 degrees can increase the risk of miscarriage and lead to an increased risk of neural tube defects in your baby – which include life-threatening malformations of the brain and spine.

The good news is there are things you can do to prevent these problems even if you get the flu.

The first is to control your fever. The March of Dimes recommends acetaminophen (Tylenol) but talk to your doctor first to make certain it’s okay for you. You should also try to keep your body as cool as possible with cold compresses, and drink plenty of fluids. Pregnancy is not the time to “sweat out ” a fever.

Second is continue to take your prenatal vitamins – particularly 1000 mcg of folic acid. Studies conducted at the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities in England, found that women who took a multi vitamin high in folic acid during pregnancy decreased their baby’s risk of birth defects, even if they ran a fever while pregnant.

In terms of the the two medications used to treat swine flu – Tamiflu and Relenza – like other flu medications they are ranked by the FDA as “Category C ” drugs – meaning they have not been tested for use during pregnancy. That said, it’s important to note that there have not been any cases of birth defects or other serious health concerns linked to the use of these drugs in pregnant women who have used them.

So, if symptoms are severe, your doctor might suggest a course of either drug, and if this is the case, experts say don’t be fearful.

Finally, relax and don’t worry! Right now, the stress and anxiety of worrying about getting sick is likely to cause you more harm than the risk of actually getting the flu, which at this point is still quite small.

Richard Stoyeck asked:

kid yourself, if you have Swine Flu, you can have the best doctors in the world taking care of you, but the name of the game is Flu Prevention, and the question is how do you resist getting the Swine Flu or any other flu for that matter? You need to get the germ into your body in order to contract the Swine Flu, and that means it has to get into an opening.

Even if you get the germ on your skin, it doesn’t guarantee you will contract Swine Flu because it must enter via the mouth, nose, or eyes. Those are the pathways into the body. If you have or are having a surgical procedure done, such as a hospital patient, than the surgical site itself is also a pathway for germs to enter the body.

I am going to give you a few basic ideas about how to prevent the Swine Flu, and for that matter, colds and viruses in general.

- Wash those hands, and keep washing them. Every time, you shake hands with someone, you are shaking hands with everyone else they have shaken hands with, since they last washed their hands. If you do shake hands, then before you touch any other part of your body including your nose, mouth, and eyes, you must get those hands clean.

- A person who is infected can pass the germ to you a day before symptoms appear, and up to 7 days after symptoms appear. You get the virus by contact with such a person directly, or by contact with an object that they touched. It is debatable how long an object such as a doorknob can retain the live germ.

- Beware of door handles. About the most germ infested surface you can touch is a door handle or the faucets you turn the water on and off with, especially in bathrooms that others use. Once you touch either of these objects, it is as though you never washed your hands at all. Our suggestion is to use the same paper towel you dry your hands with as a barrier between your now germ free hand and the door knob or water faucet.

- At work, we keep bottles of Windex handy. Just spray the bathroom doors, and the faucets and the door handles to people’s offices and let the air dry them which only takes a minute or two. If you immediately dry the surface, you destroy most of the germ inhibiting barrier.

- Go to a major discounter like Wal-Mart and stock up on hand sanitizers. Easily carried 2 to 4 oz bottles that can fit in your pocket, are less than a $1 and give one to each member of the family. They are fabulous for cleaning hands, and the residue evaporates within seconds. Doctors use them all the time. It’s cheap insurance.

- If and when the Swine Flu hits your area, than order some masks that are N95 rated. They are recommended by the Center for Disease Control, and are very inexpensive. Go online and Google “Swine Flu Masks”, and check prices.

Follow these simple rules religiously, and we think the Swine Flu will be bypassing you and your house this season. Good luck.

http://googlemapsmania.blogspot.com/2009/04/swine-flu-outbreak-on-google-maps.html

None of the maps below are likely to help overcome the Swine Flu and most of the maps are far less accurate than the map created by John Snow made back in 1854. However these maps do give us a reasonable overall impression of how the outbreak is spreading.

The World Health Organization raised its alert level to f?ve — “one step short of declaring a pandemic”, as reports of those affected or killed by the swine flu virus began to increase across the globe.

As of 4 May 2009, 20 countries have officially reported 985 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection.

Mexico has reported 590 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 25 deaths. The higher number of cases from Mexico reflects ongoing testing of previously collected specimens. The United States has reported 226 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death.

The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths – Austria (1), Canada (85), China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (1), Costa Rica (1), Colombia (1), Denmark (1), El Salvador (2), France (2), Germany (8), Ireland (1), Israel (3), Italy (1), Netherlands (1), New Zealand (4), Republic of Korea (1), Spain (40), Switzerland (1) and the United Kingdom (15).

There is no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products.

It is considered prudent for people who are ill to delay international travel and for people developing symptoms following international travel to seek medical attention, in line with guidance from national authorities. Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness.

WHO advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders.

There ?s no effective vaccine already available against the new influenza A(H1N1) virus, but work is already under way to develop such a vaccine. Influenza vaccines generally contain a dead or weakened form of a circulating virus. The vaccine prepares the body’s immune system to defend against a true infection. For the vaccine to protect as well as possible, the virus in it should match the circulating “wild-type” virus relatively closely. Since this H1N1 virus is new, there is no vaccine currently available made with this particular virus. Making a completely new influenza vaccine can take five to six months.

As soon as the first human cases of new influenza A(H1N1) infection became known to WHO, the WHO Collaborating Center in Atlanta (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States of America) took immediate action and began the work to develop candidate vaccine viruses. WHO also initiated consultations with vaccine manufacturers worldwide to facilitate the availability of all necessary material to start production of influenza A(H1N1) vaccine. In parallel, WHO is working with national regulatory authorities to ensure that the new influenza A(H1N1) vaccine will meet all safety criteria and be made available as soon as possible.

What about this for a plot – any good writers out there?

2 politicians – rivals – but thrown together and one quickly cottoning on to the fact that together he/they can achieve – and they do – party into power – long period of success fuelled by the charm and skilled oratory of the one and the skilled financial crookery & manipulation of the other – hey ho – things starting to get a touch difficult so boss man decides time to go in order to complete his conquering of the world and  building of his financial empire from a more accepting and friendly dinner guest audience.

The other? – Well of course he is handed the poisoned chalice of leadership which by now has poisioned most of the worlds financial systems and comes tumbling down around his ears – does he worry? – not a bit of it – by now he is the consummate manipulator, spinner of spin & crook of all crooks – so he simply presents himself as the rescuer of the worlds financial systems ably assisted by some clever teamwork with his former boss as they deftly manoeuvre into place the new boy on the block who just happens to be leader of the most powerful nation in the world – which of course is also suffering deeply from the crookedness of the financial system engineered by these two crafty and crooked politicians.

Meanwhile the press is getting ever more intrusive and some blatant exposure of the lying and deceit inside the leaders office is this time not calmed by his out and out denial – no – he is actually forced onto the back step of an apology.

Little wonder then that he enters the G20 financial summit hatching a clever plan to divert the world’s attention away from the crumbling and rotten financial and political morass – with a couple of other leaders alongside and shortly afterwards ….well would you believe it… an outbreak of Swine flu which of course is enough to scare the pants off a world already down in the dumps and deftly set up earlier by bird flu to predictably react to such scare mongering diversionary tactics.

Does not take much of a leap of imagination for one to envisage a bio chemist secret agent quietly dispatched to Mexico as a tourist with a carefully prepared phial of potent virus. (More than likely designed to extinguish itself within a few weeks – just watch – I bet this scare disappears in a couple of weeks as quickly as it has begun.)  Come on, look at it, this sort of happening is only the daily grist of the main time scary TV dramas we are repeatedly fed.

Oh! And of course we must remember the design includes the advantage of offering ‘New Boy’ some help – I mean that Mexico border and the immigrants – put a stop to that for a while eh!

And what a lucky break for our erstwhile and scheming politician – the first planeload of infected tourists to land back home back happen to be from Scotland – just the job – what with them being run by those pesky Nationalists and causing all sorts of problems.

All in all a story with a lot of stinking ‘Brown’ stuff in it. Just wants a heroic and clever rebel agent now to expose it all and fit in a real nice ending. That would of course firmly establishes it as total fiction.

Swine Flu Facts

Author:

Eric Kampel asked:

Swine influenza – Swine influenza or swine flu is a respiratory disease in pigs caused by the type A H1N1 swine influenza virus (SIV). Humans in close proximity to swine could contract swine influenza if the swine are carrying the rare strain of the SIV that is capable of affecting humans.

SymptomsSwine flu symptoms in humans are generally similar to regular flu (influenza) symptoms and include muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, lack of appetite, fever, chills, and general weakness and discomfort. Other reported symptoms are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Transmission – Swine flu spreads from pigs to humans when humans are close to infected pigs. People working in barns or visiting livestock exhibits housing infected pigs are likely to get affected. Transmission from humans to humans can occur when the infected individual coughs or sneezes when others are close by. Putting one’s hands to the nose or mouth after touching anything with the flu viruses on it could also spread the infection. Consuming well-cooked pork and pork products won’t cause infection as cooking to an internal temperature of 160°F kills bacteria and viruses, including the swine flu virus.

Treatment and medication – While swine flu can generally be cured by the four antiviral drugs approved for curing flu in the US, amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir, the recent 2009 swine flu outbreak viruses have been found to be resistant to the first two drugs. Oseltamivir and zanamivir are now recommended for treatment and prevention of swine influenza.

Prevention – Swine flu can be prevented by taking certain precautionary measures, such as washing hands frequently with soap or an alcohol-based hand wash. Staying away from infected individuals is important as their coughing or sneezing could spread the infection. If instances of infection are reported in your locality, stay indoors as far as possible. Swine flue vaccine could be out by June 2009.

So far the fatality rate of the Swine Flu virus in Mexico is about 10% in confirmed cases. Doctors in Mexico are saying that the flu medication they are provided with doesn’t work with this virus. So far no deaths reported outside of Mexico, and all people who got sick outside of Mexico improve in their condition after they are given treatment. Do you believe this strand of flu was created to depopulate Mexico? If so, by who?
