There are dozens of different possible flu strains that can circulate through the population at any one time.  Once you get one of these strains, your body learns to produce a defense against that particular strain and you can’t get it again after your body beats it.  If you could get all of them, you would never get the flu again; but only a few strains float around at once.  As time passes and new people are born, old strains begin to come back and infect a whole new population with no immunity.  About 2% of all the people who catch the flu will die from it due to complications like old age and compromised immune systems.  The worst outbreak happened in 1918 and killed about 20% of everyone who contracted the virus, but our knowledge is far greater now than it was then.

The last time swine flu showed up was in 1976, and just like now there was a large panic in the population because of bad information.  The government spent millions of dollars on a flu vaccine that did little to help with the strain, and people were urged to get the shot for the whole family.  When it was all said and done, more people had died from the vaccine than from the flu itself because the strain never swept through the population.  This time around, it is more widespread and it appears to be hitting the population with a fury.  A feverish, achy, take a couple days off and you will be fine fury.  You may get it and you may not, but unless you are at risk from any other virus; it isn’t anything to really worry about.

I’m in 7th grade science too, if that helps.

I’ve got a science project I need to finish and we have to do research on a certain disease. I chose this one because ONE, it’s a disease that the government is ashamed of and it’s not in published textbooks or ANYTHING. I think it’d be nice to teach at least the kids in my class about it. Aaand TWO, becuase Edward Cullen died from it in the Twilight series.

Just one sneeze thrusts 100,000 droplets into the air at around 90 mph, landing on everything around you. Swine flu can be treated. Though it is resistant to two of the four drugs approved for treating flu, two new arrivals, Tamiflu and Relenza have proven to be successful.

Mexico houses hundreds of industrial-scale hog facilities, known as ‘confined animal feeding operations’, where pigs are packed tightly in rows. The outbreak of Swine Flu in Mexico has caused many to go into a state of panic. As of today’s date, there are confirmed infected persons in Canada, Scotland, New Zealand, Spain, and Israel. Since the 1970s the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a division of the U.S. Public Health Service, and the cruise industry established a good cooperative relationship through the establishment and implementation of a Vessel Sanitization Program (VSP).  The simple goal of the VSP is to assist the cruise ship industry to prevent and control the introduction, transmission, and spread of gastrointestinal illnesses (GI) on cruise ships.  The VSP is implemented through a program which consists of Inspection, Monitoring, Training, and Providing Education.

During an inspection, the CDC inspects the medical facilities, portable water systems, swimming pools and whirlpool spas, galleys and dining rooms, children activity center, hotel accommodations (rooms and suites), ventilation systems, and common areas of the ship.  The CDC utilizes electronic monitoring of illness on cruise ships, and must be notified of illness onboard prior to the ships arrival at a U.S. port.    Most importantly, all cruise lines must develop and maintain an Outbreak Prevention and Response Plan (OPRP).  In the event of an outbreak, the cruise ship is required to increase daily cleaning and disinfection frequencies; stop high-risk activities, such as self-service buffet tables and handshaking; isolate ill people; collect clinical and/or environmental specimens for analysis; and provide daily updates to VSP that include case counts and reports of what the ship has done to establish control.

As you can see, the cruise line industry has been trained and prepared for more than thirty years to handle and manage infections like the Swine Flu.  In fact, some cruise lines have successful done so over the years.  In addition to all the precautions, all cruise ships, unlike many all inclusive vacations destinations, have medical infirmaries, with the appropriate staff to manage acute situations.  Additionally, to bridge the gap, cruise lines, and their agents, usually recommend the purchase of travel insurance to cover medical expenses, emergence air transportation, and other important items, in the unlikely event that illness interrupts your vacation.
