Like any type of new illness there are precautions people can take to prevent infection and the spread of the Swine Flu. It natural for people to cough directly into their hands. All the germs coming from the reparatory system are transported from the internal body and passed along to places, like car keys, door knobs, drinking fountains, and door handles. This can devastate the main population if one is carrying the actual Swine Flu. Create a habit of coughing into your shoulder or into your arm to minimize the spread of all germs and not just the Swine Flu.

At night it would be favorable to spray Lysol spray on light switches, toilet seats, toilet handles, freezer and fridge handles to kill the Swine flu and other bacteria. Lysol is a powerful deterrent to assist in the spread of germs, and illness. Pump bottles of hand sanitizer will help kill the germs on the surface of the skin and can assist in preventing the spread of the Swine flu. But there is a more advanced and preferred method to preventing the spread of Swine Flu.

We have been taught from an early age to wash our hands. Many take for granted the hand washing philosophy. The truth is that Lysol, hand sanitizer, coughing into the arm are all good ways but a good solid deep hand wash is the number one method for preventing the spread of germs. Hand sanitizer, and Lysol only kill the surface of where these items are applied. A deep hand wash bypasses the surface of the skin and really digs down to the grooves and pits of the hand. Up to this point most deaths from the new swine flu have occurred in Mexico, striking indiscriminately at young and old.  What alarms health officials is the ability of this flu to kill seemingly healthy young adults, which is a prerequisite for a pandemic.  I have received a number of questions from concerned individuals wondering if boosting their immune system would make them more susceptible to a problem, a question I will cover in detail.

First, let’s put what we do know in perspective.  Many of the Mexicans who have died are lower income individuals living in unsanitary and crowded conditions which are ideal breeding grounds for germs.  It has been reported that they cannot afford to take time off work to seek medical care.  Their diets are often lacking in key nutrients that would help the immune system behave normally.  Nevertheless, there is still serious and legitimate concern that young adults can be killed by this flu.

The first death in the U.S. occurred in a 23-month-old Mexican infant who was in Texas at the time of outbreak.  What has concerned health authorities here is that they were unable to save the child despite the use of anti-viral drugs, breathing assistance, and the best care that could be mustered.

The flu pandemic of 1918, also a swine flu, struck many young adults.  Only recently did scientists figure out that this earlier swine flu was able to hijack the host’s own immune response and ramp up the inflammatory aspect of that immune response and thereby increase its level of attack in a healthy person.

It is important to understand that your immune system is not just one type of response, it is many.  If you get the flu you absolutely must have the energy and nutrition to be able to make antibodies.  The speed and efficiency you can do this will determine the severity of infection and your odds of survival.

For example, in cases where humans contracted the bird flu in Asia, if they began making enough antibodies to the infection by day 7 they lived, if they didn’t start mounting an effective response by day 9 they died.  This pattern appears similar to the current reports of people dying in Mexico – by the 9th day of a significant battle it is too late unless your own immune system has kicked into gear.  In this context you must have the nutritional horsepower to fuel antibody production or you could be in for a very unpleasant experience.

Another aspect of your immune response is its initial inflammatory reaction – which is of course normal.  This is one aspect of immunity that occurs before antibodies are made, and is part of the process that leads to antibodies being made.  It is possible for a younger or healthier person to have a more exaggerated inflammation response than an elderly person, infant, or person with compromised immunity.  In this scenario, inflammatory cytokines may become their own problem – think of this as a “cytokine storm.”  This was the case with the similar flu in 1918.

This problem does not mean that you should not attempt to naturally boost your immune system.  It does mean that you should use nutrients as part of your immune support protocol that reduce inflammation so as to help “put a lid” on how much inflammation is generated.  The single best nutrient for this is quercetin, which has been proven to help prevent the flu.  However, there are many nutrients that are anti-inflammatory in nature and any of them would be helpful, including the fresh fruit and vegetables that should be part of your diet.

It is also important to understand that a younger adult who is stressed out, not sleeping enough, eating poorly, is too anxious or wound up, and is in a general trend of wear and tear has already primed the inflammatory pump.  This means that a flu entering into such a person is much more likely to have a magnified inflammatory response because this person’s anti-inflammatory and relaxation reserves are already running on empty.

During the time of a potential flu pandemic the last thing you want to do is let yourself get worn down.  Besides lifestyle management, any nutrients that help you sleep better, feel calmer, or manage stress better will also help your immune system not hyper-react to a problem.

While this may seem like common sense, there are many people out there who are generally healthy but are running their bodies into the ground trying to get things done.  This is definitely a time to re-evaluate your priorities as doing so can put you into a high risk category if this flu begins to spread.

In my recent article, Tips for the Flu Season, I have given a thorough review of nutrition that can help you effectively boost and support your own immune system.  You need to be able to make immune troops on demand, have them well armed, while at the same time minimizing the inflammatory aspect of fighting a bug.  Of course, if you do develop a problem seek medical care.

Like the influenza virus affecting humans, swine flu viruses are constantly mutating. Although the swine flu viruses are not the same as human flu viruses, swine flu symptoms resemble those produced by regular human seasonal influenza. In humans, common swine flu symptoms are fever, chills, sore throat, muscle pain, severe headache, coughing, lethargy, lack of appetite, weakness, and general discomfort. Some may even experience runny or stuffy nose, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

However in humans, self care measures and appropriate treatment in the early stages of infection can reduce the increased risk of these complications. In order to confirm that the illness is the result of a swine flu virus, one must undergo laboratory testing. Antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu and Relenza are considered effective for the treatment and/or prevention of infection by swine flu viruses.

Every day our bodies are attacked by viruses and bacteria that weaken our immune system and make us more vulnerable to diseases like the Swine Flu.

 

Swine Flu is a serious disease.  All flues are serious.  Even with the flu shots so many people get, around 36,000 people die in the United States yearly from the flu.  The concern is that a pandemic may occur.  If it does, many more people will die.  A pandemic is a disease that affects people worldwide.  An epidemic is more contained.

 

The Swine Flu is a respiratory illness that is spread from pigs to humans to other humans.  We spread it to each other much like we do colds—coughing, sneezing, and touching things with the virus on it.  Wearing masks offer little protection unless you are also wearing disposable gloves and wash your hands well after disposing of both, then disinfecting the sink and handles.  Unrealistic.

 

Symptoms are regular flu symptoms—fever, running nose, sore throat, and you can develop vomiting and diarrhea.

 

Treatment:  Antibiotics don’t work against viruses.  The antivirals may work but problems are developing that viruses are becoming immune to them.  Plus to work, you must take them within 48 hours of contact.  Often, with the flu, you don’t recognize the symptoms until it is too late for the antivirals to work.

 

So, how can we protect ourselves?

 

We keep our immune system in top shape so that if we do contact the Swine Flu, our bodies will fight serious complications.  We boost our immune system with certain foods.

Double the orange juice.  Don’t forget the kids.  Have them trade some of that apple juice for orange juice.

Eat carrots, sweet potatoes, and sweet bell peppers.

Beans, whole grains, nuts, especially walnuts, shrimp, and red meat.

At the epicenter of the new swine flu outbreak in Perote, Mexico is, not surprisingly, a very large commercial pig farm.  It is owned by American-based Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork packer and hog producer.  This location raises 950,000 hogs per year.  Hogs have the unique ability to change viral DNA into something that can now recognize human cells.  Thirty percent of the residents living nearby have this new swine flu.

There is no question that large hog farms are an ideal breeding ground for new viral strains.  The issue is complicated by large farms wherein massive waste is also present and difficult to manage, readily polluting nearby water.  The smell from such farms is beyond horrid.  Residents living nearby were the first to be documented with this new swine flu, and they are certain that between their polluted groundwater and when the winds shift their direction, the hog farm is the source of their flu problem.  The company says, at this time, that its hogs don’t have the virus.  Does anyone trust them?

I remember when Jessie Ventura had to body slam Cargill in court to get them to stop polluting Minnesota lakes with feces from its commercial farming operations.  In Mexico you can assume regulations are even more lax.  These commercial hog farms, like just about any commercial farming operation of any kind, are detriments to human health and tend to produce low-quality food at risk for transmission of food poisoning.

If this swine flu does pick up speed in the United States, every time it reaches a commercial pig farm it will get a major boost of virulent activity.

Don’t expect any politicians from the pig states to speak up. In fact, don’t expect the CDC or Department of Homeland Security to care at all.  They are going to be too busy trying to cram experimental vaccines down the throats of everyone – and now that they have declared an emergency you should fully understand that you have no right of recourse of any kind if you should be injured from such a vaccine.

If this does turn into a pandemic, which is still too early to tell, we will be looking at several years of the problem.  Anti-viral drugs will have limited effectiveness for the first wave – and after that the virus will mutate around them and they will be worthless (that will take 2-8 weeks).  It will take six months to make an experimental vaccine. In the mean time expect so many enforced quarantines that certain members of the public will be falling all over themselves to line up for the government’s concoction – I won’t be one of them.  Our government has a horrid track record with experimental vaccines, just ask our Gulf War vets. 

Government officials should consider shutting down commercial pig farms if this new swine flu starts killing Americans – the sooner the better.

While it may sound like something out of a bad sci-fi movie, it has become our reality. US doctors, in accordance with WHO regulations, have drafted a document deciding who will live and who will be allowed to die when the Swine Flu Pandemic strikes the greater part of North America.

Once Swine Flu has America in its death grip, medical care — including everything from vaccines to respirators to doctors and nurses themselves — will become scarce. So a task force of members from prestigious universities, medical groups, and government agencies (the Department of Homeland Security, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Health and Human Services, and World Health Organization) has compiled a list of people who would not be treated.

Those of us most affected by this decision can easily see this as an attempt to “play God” on the part of these doctors who so willingly ignore their Hippocratic oaths, but Dr. Asha Devereaux, a critical care specialist and lead writer of the task force report, called the guidelines a “blueprint for hospitals so that everybody will be thinking in the same way.”

It’s being recommended that every hospital choose a triage team to decide who will get lifesaving treatment and who will not, but the guidelines already spells out those who will be denied care. They include:

People older than 85

People with severe trauma, such as critical injuries from car crashes and shootings

Severely burned patients older than 60

People with severe mental impairment, such as advanced Alzheimer’s disease

People with severe chronic disease, such as advanced heart failure, lung disease or poorly controlled diabetes

Others who are at a high risk of death or have a low chance of long-term survival would also be unlikely to receive medical care.

The guidelines will clearly violate laws against age discrimination and disability discrimination, according to public health law expert Lawrence Gostin of Georgetown University. Gostin also called the report “a political and legal minefield.”

Though most experts acknowledge that health care will, in fact, need to be rationed once Swine Flu infections begin, the current list will basically single out the poor blacks, Mexicans, homosexuals, non-English-speaking peoples and any others who are generally considered as undesirables in America. Because in addition to this list, the triage team will, at its discretion, decide on millions of others who will be arbitrarily denied medical treatment.

As for when the guidelines will be enforced, members of the task force said it’s only a matter of time. Phase Five Pandemic Alert means that a pandemic with millions infected, dead, and dying is imminent. It WILL happen!

According to Secretary Michael O. Leavitt, Department of Health and Human Services:

“Forty million people died when the last major influenza pandemic swept around the world in 1918. We have seen two less severe pandemics since then. We will no doubt see another sometime in the future.

We don’t know when, and we don’t know how bad it will be. But we know it will happen sooner or later and that what we do now will save lives – maybe millions of lives – in the future.”

How did this happen? How did we get to the point where we allowed an engineered virus to be released onto an unsuspecting population – then in the face of imminent death – we are being told that our job is to die.

Don’t allow this fate to happen to your family. The triage experience will not be just about the color of your skin. You may be denied treatment just because someone doesn’t like you or in your haste to get treatment for your loved one, you may become momentarily rude.

Any little thing can mean life or death for someone you love.

The world has been alarmed about the increasing death toll the Swine Flu epidemic has caused in Mexico. Both the WHO and the CDC has expressed concern that it can become a serious flu pandemic, because it can be transferred from human to human. Government agencies across the world are monitoring the situation at the moment and reporting to the World Health Organization about any suspected Swine Flu victims.

For unknown reasons, the only deaths known to occur as a result of the swine flu epidemic occurred in Mexico. It is seen to affect even young and healthy adults. Therefore, in theory, anyone can catch the swine flu. Each one of us must therefore be cautious and try to avoid contact with sick people, even if they?re not affected by swine flu.

New Zealand is the lone southern-hemisphere country that has a confirmed case of swine flu. There are countries that have advised their citizens to refrain from travelling to infected areas, so that they will avoid getting it. Some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, ban the import of pork products, as a precautionary measure against the epidemic.
