Lynne Gordon asked:

The current Swine Flu epidemic has caused a lot of concern over the possible repercussions since there is no viable vaccine that will remedy the illness.  Swine Flu is actually, according to the CDC, a combination (or recombination) of pig, avian (bird) and either sheep or cow viruses. Somehow all of these separate viruses combined themselves together and jumped species to humans. Sound familiar?

When the AIDS virus first began making news about 1981, we were told by the CDC that 3 Africans had sex with a green monkey and these normal homebodies then began traveling world-wide and spread AIDS to the rest of the world. Now we are being asked to believe something equally absurd has happened with three separate viruses to cause this new swine flu epidemic.

As of April 24, 2009 these are the current statistics:

149 dead in Mexico, 1,614 infected

40 infected in the United States

6 infected in Canada

10 infected in New Zealand

20 suspected infected in Spain

14 suspected in Britain

1 Infected in Israel

Looking at these stats it is assumable that this epidemic began in Mexico. And again we hear the mantra that black and brown people are just so environmentally unclean that these diseases naturally come from wherever they inhabit.  If these assumptions were being made of the Jewish people, there would be international outrage by Jews at being singled out for possible harassment and embarrassment. But who will speak up for Mexico? Who spoke up for Africa when the first lie was released.

There appears to be a continual attempt to vilify certain black and brown segments of American society. But the question is why?

If you have been paying attention, the answer is simple.

If this is a manufactured (or recombined) virus…who is responsible?

Who has the finances to use the very expensive recombinant DNA series to manufacture this deadly disease?

Who has the necessary resources to package it and implement its exposure into a select group of people?

And who has the will and the callousness to attempt to genocidally wipe out entire nations without a second thought?

If it is not a manufactured virus, then we really need to find that human who had such intimate contact with a pig last week and a bird earlier this week because he would then be patient zero.

The fact is folks, this is only the beginning of these deadly diseases…in all probability, there may be more. We need to start asking the right questions and hold our leaders responsible for the answers they give us.

We also need to look at the major pharmaceutical companies that stand to cash-in on this epidemic. What have their stocks done in the past month? What were they doing six months ago? What are they doing today?

I truly hope I am 100% wrong, but…in the meantime, just follow the money.

Swine Flu Facts

Author:

Eric Kampel asked:

Swine influenza – Swine influenza or swine flu is a respiratory disease in pigs caused by the type A H1N1 swine influenza virus (SIV). Humans in close proximity to swine could contract swine influenza if the swine are carrying the rare strain of the SIV that is capable of affecting humans.

SymptomsSwine flu symptoms in humans are generally similar to regular flu (influenza) symptoms and include muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, lack of appetite, fever, chills, and general weakness and discomfort. Other reported symptoms are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Transmission – Swine flu spreads from pigs to humans when humans are close to infected pigs. People working in barns or visiting livestock exhibits housing infected pigs are likely to get affected. Transmission from humans to humans can occur when the infected individual coughs or sneezes when others are close by. Putting one’s hands to the nose or mouth after touching anything with the flu viruses on it could also spread the infection. Consuming well-cooked pork and pork products won’t cause infection as cooking to an internal temperature of 160°F kills bacteria and viruses, including the swine flu virus.

Treatment and medication – While swine flu can generally be cured by the four antiviral drugs approved for curing flu in the US, amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir, the recent 2009 swine flu outbreak viruses have been found to be resistant to the first two drugs. Oseltamivir and zanamivir are now recommended for treatment and prevention of swine influenza.

Prevention – Swine flu can be prevented by taking certain precautionary measures, such as washing hands frequently with soap or an alcohol-based hand wash. Staying away from infected individuals is important as their coughing or sneezing could spread the infection. If instances of infection are reported in your locality, stay indoors as far as possible. Swine flue vaccine could be out by June 2009.

John Stone asked:

The swine flu is the thing what we are mostly discussed in these days and most of the people are really interested to get knowing what this is. According to the scientific explanation, swine flu is a virus which was originated with the swine and now it has spread to the humans also. They have named this virus as Swine influenza (H1-N1) and still remain as a critical virus category. Because of that, still there are not vaccines in order to prevent from the infection and the only thing we can do is control the spread of it.

If you are really interest and concern on stopping the spread, then there few basic things you can follow through.  As an example, it is always better to cover up your nose and mouth while you’re sneezing and when going near to a person who is sneezing or coughing, the reason is that this virus can be spread through the air and you need to take all possible precautions to stop it.

Also if you are feeling not well and sick, then it is always better to get the immediate medical attention as it can be the beginning of the swine flu. Since it is the beginning, the doctors can do some little more in order to keep your situation under control till they find a proper solution for the virus.

However the doctors has identified that there are no specific symptoms for this swine virus and the symptoms are same as normal flu. So if you are having heavy headache, fever , chilling, body ache, vomiting, diarrhea and any other symptom with relevant to the normal flue, it is always recommended to get medical attention and try to cover up your mouth & nose always. So it will be a great help to prevent the virus being spread.

Since this virus is originated with the swine, the doctors and scientists are still doing their investigations in order to find a proper cure for the virus. So the state government has given the full support for this process as they have understood the gravity of the situation.

Also most of the meat processors have stopped producing pork due to this situation and the market also refusing pork. So it is a good point to avoid the spread of virus and it needs to be controlled accordingly. However the farmers have taken necessary precautions to keep the swine away from the other animals and the foods available at the farm to assure the safety from the swine flu. However by the time of now, few infected people have died due to the swine flu and it is a good point to understand the critical condition of this situation. Because of that, the scientists and the doctors work with their maximum capacity in order to find a proper solution for this critical virus. So the people are awaiting a very good solution in the very near future.

Yes, you must’ve heard it already. Spine Flu is no more a virgin word. It’s caused by spine influenza virus that usually affects pigs. However, the new swine flu having prospective ecumenical affects is a new strain of virus, H1N1 strain, A type, containing genes of the swine influenza.

News is spreading like wild fire with warning that the swine flu can be transmitted via aerial droplets, for example when sneezing, or via saliva or feces. Clinical symptoms generally seen are: fever, widespread pain, fatigue, nose catarrh and cough.

There have been cases in Mexico reported to have human-to-human transmission. Although many countries have been controlling airplanes to stop the virus from turning into an epidemic, there was a 25 year old man tested positive in Hong Kong recently.

Although it was said that the virus might not touch Asia, Hong Kong has gone frantic with its attempts to isolate the person affected and give him appropriate treatment. They have actually tried tracking down every person who possibly had contact with the man while his travel from Mexico via Shanghai.

There were two taxi drivers who assisted the Mexican and if they are infected and they don’t appear, there shall be bad consequences. It’s a critical time in Hong Kong.

The attendants in the hotels where the Mexican was staying were quarantined for seven days. It is however an international joke that the Metropark hotel has been locked up even though most people in the hotel have not even contacted with the infected man and overseas tourist are under vigilance for seven days.

China is soon to suspend all flights from Mexico to avoid further prospective infects. These frenetic preventive steps are because they’ve been through a painful epidemic with painful nostalgia carrying it, the SARS breakout which had taken away many innocent lives in its vicious circle.

Gearing up to fight the disease with facial masks in restaurants and on public transport, the spirit of the city hasn’t dampened as it hasn’t canceled any concerts and shows that are scheduled to happen in Hong Kong. Prevention is surely better than cure, but there isn’t any harm having fun while prevention. Don’t you think?

Ram Gunjal asked:

In late March and early April 2009, cases of human infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) viruses were first reported in Southern California and near San Antonio, Texas. CDC and local and state health agencies are working together to investigate this situation.

CDC has determined that this virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. However, at this time, it not known how easily the virus spreads between people.

Symptoms : The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

How serious is swine flu infection?

Like seasonal flu, swine flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe. Between 2005 until January 2009, 12 human cases of swine flu were detected in the U.S. with no deaths occurring. However, swine flu infection can be serious. In September 1988, a previously healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman in Wisconsin was hospitalized for pneumonia after being infected with swine flu and died 8 days later. A swine flu outbreak in Fort Dix, New Jersey occurred in 1976 that caused more than 200 cases with serious illness in several people and one death.

Spread of swine flu can occur in two ways:

Through contact with infected pigs or environments contaminated with swine flu viruses. Through contact with a person with swine flu. Human-to-human spread of swine flu has been documented also and is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

Medicines to treat swine flu?

CDC recommends the use of oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with these swine influenza viruses. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

How long can an infected person spread swine flu to others?

People with swine influenza virus infection should be considered potentially contagious as long as they are symptomatic and possible for up to 7 days following illness onset. Children, especially younger children, might potentially be contagious for longer periods.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?

There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu.

There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza.

Arunraj V.S. asked:

How do I know if I have symptoms of Swine Flu? Are the swine flu symptoms of children the same as H1N1 symptoms adults? Let us know the answer to the question “Do I have symptoms of Swine Flu?”

Swine Flu is a number one health concern the world over. The HI1N1 flu or Swine Flu was first detected in US in April 2009. The worst affected areas initially were Canada and Mexico before swine flu cases began to emerge in other areas of the world. In a short span of four months, the disease has spread to almost all regions in the world. World Health Organization has called H1N1 as pandemic which means a big epidemic that involves the entire country or perhaps the world. Usually, the signs of a pandemic are when a virus without any immunity to stop it, spreads across various parts of the world.

Risk factors of Swine Flu

Swine Flu spreads from person to person in the same way as regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. People with high risk for seasonal flu are also at high risk for Swine Flu. For example, people above 65 years of age, pregnant women, children below 5 years of age and those with chronic medical conditions and lifestyle diseases like diabetes are at high risk of getting swine flu.

Symptoms of Swine Flu

In children, the symptoms of swine flu include:

1. Rapid Breathing or Difficulty in breathing.

2. Grayish or Bluish Skin Color

3. Dehydration

4. Persistent of severe vomiting

5. Not able to interact properly with people, become irritable

6. Flu like symptoms, bad cough and fever

In adults, the symptoms of swine flu include:

1. Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing

2. Pain in chest or abdomen

3. Sudden dizziness or loss of energy

4. Severe or continuous vomiting

6. Flu like symptoms, bad cough and fever

The symptoms of H1N1 swine flu is similar to the ones that people get in regular, seasonal flu and so things like fever, sneezing, cough, body ache, head ache, shivering, sore throat and fatigue are common. Diarrhea and vomiting are also symptoms that have been associated with some cases of swine flu.

How do I catch swine flu?

H1N1 Swine Flu is transmitted the same way like seasonal flu. Flu viruses are spread usually from person to person through sneezing or coughing by people who have influenza. Some people may become infected with the deadly H1N1 by touching something that has virus on it and then bringing to their nose or mouth

How can someone with swine flu infect it to someone else?

Infected people can actually infect others from the first day itself, even before they themselves get any symptoms. This means there are also chances that one can pass on the symptoms of swine flu even before she or he knows that she or he is sick.

How do I protect myself from swine flu? How can I take precautions against swine flu?

There is no vaccine that can protect you or be prevention against H1N1 Swine Flu. You can only maintain hygiene and take care to prevent spread of germs that can lead to illnesses like influenza. Here are the ways in which you can prevent yourself against swine flu:

1. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough. Throw the tissue in the trash after you sneeze into it.

2. Wash your hands with a liquid handwash like Dettol or Lifebuoy, especially after you cough or sneeze.

3. Do not touch your mouth, eyes or nose. Germs can spread in this manner.

4. Avoid contact with people who are infected with swine flu. This is sad but then the disease is highly infective.

5. If you are sick with influenza, stay at home and do not go to school or work. Limit your contact with people so that they do not get infected.

6. Do not venture into crowded spaces.

7. Increase the airflow in your room by opening the windows for proper ventilation.

8. Sleep well, eat nutritious food and practise healthy habits so that you are physically active and immune to the flu

How long can the Swine Flu virus stay on things like doorknobs and furniture?

According to medical experts, the influenza virus can stay on environmental surfaces and infect people from 2 to 8 hours after being deposited on things like door knobs, books etc. Germs of swine flu can spread when a person touches infected areas or infected people and then touches their eyes, ears, nose or mouth. Cough droplets or sneeze from an infected person can travel through the area. When a person comes in contact with droplets of sneeze of another person or touches things like books or desk of that person that is contaminated with sneeze droplets, and touches his or her own eyes, mouth, nose etc; before washing hands, one can contract H1N1 virus.

What are the medicines and treatment options for H1N1 swine flu?

Taking oseltamivir(Tamiflu) or zanamivir(Relenza) can treat swine flu or H1N1 but they should be taken in the early stages of the disease. Antiviral drugs or prescription medicines can make your immune system strong and keep the flu viruses at bay and stop them from reproducing in your body. So, you should start taking antiviral drugs within two days of getting H1N1 or influenza symptoms.

How do I prevent getting H1N1 (Swine flu) in high risk areas?

If you live in places where people have been infected with H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus or have influenza like symptoms mentioned above, then you should stay home and avoid contact with these people. If you develop flu like symptoms, do not leave things to chance and take instant medical care. Your health care provider or doctor will be able to tell you whether H1N1 flu testing is required.

Does WHO recommend using a MASK?

If you are not sick or if you are not living in high risk areas, it is not required to wear a mask. If a near and dear one is sick with H1N1, you need to wear a mask since you will be in close contact with the ill person. Dispose the mask after contact and wash and clean your hands thoroughly. Using the mask correctly is important because using it incorrectly will spread infection.

How can I differentiate between H1N1 Swine Flu and seasonal flu?

You cannot tell the difference between HI1N1 Swine Flu and Seasonal Flu without a medical verdict on it. Since symptoms for both the diseases are same like cough, headache, sneezing, fever, runny nose etc, only your doctor will be able to say if you have H1N1 virus. In case, your doctor suspects symptoms, they will have your blood sample, nasopharyngeal (nose to mouth) and throat swab to laboratories.

Home remedies for swine flu:

There are no home remedies for swine flu, especially when you have to figure out if it is swine flu or season flu. Swine Flu requires anti-viral drugs because treating it is an emergency issue. However you can prevent the spread of swine flu and strengthen your immune system by doing the following:

Wash your hands properly before having a meal, not just with soap and water. Wear face mask before going outside. If someone is coughing or sneezing near you, cover your nose and mouth with palms or a hanky. Swine flu gets into the body through the mouth and nose. Drink lemon balm tea because it has anti-viral properties. Chew fresh garlic cloves because they have antiviral properties as well. Steam inhalation with chamomile or eucalyptus thrice a day can relieve lung congestion and prevent swine flu symptoms

S Porter asked:

For several years the media has been cautiously following the possibility of a bird flu outbreak, but swine flu has beaten it to the punch.  Influenza is a nasty little virus that can be deadly under the right conditions, and bird flu is a particularly bad strain that is deadly more often.  No matter which strain happens to be floating around; the symptoms are the same; coughing, sneezing, aching and fever.  If you have a cold, this could also describe how you feel except for the fever; which only occurs with the flu.  Education is always the best way to combat fear, so knowing the facts about influenza can help ease the mind.

There are dozens of different possible flu strains that can circulate through the population at any one time.  Once you get one of these strains, your body learns to produce a defense against that particular strain and you can’t get it again after your body beats it.  If you could get all of them, you would never get the flu again; but only a few strains float around at once.  As time passes and new people are born, old strains begin to come back and infect a whole new population with no immunity.  About 2% of all the people who catch the flu will die from it due to complications like old age and compromised immune systems.  The worst outbreak happened in 1918 and killed about 20% of everyone who contracted the virus, but our knowledge is far greater now than it was then.

The first thing to remember about swine flu is that it’s just another flu strain; and this isn’t the first time we have seen it.  Every year doctors guess which strains will float around the population and they produce a vaccine to fight them.  Swine flu wasn’t what they guessed for this year, but even last years flu vaccine seems to be partially effective in preventing people from getting this strain.  It also responds very well to every type of treatment we currently use to fight influenza.  All in all, less than 1% of people who catch swine flu die from it; so it’s even lighter than just a regular flu.

The last time swine flu showed up was in 1976, and just like now there was a large panic in the population because of bad information.  The government spent millions of dollars on a flu vaccine that did little to help with the strain, and people were urged to get the shot for the whole family.  When it was all said and done, more people had died from the vaccine than from the flu itself because the strain never swept through the population.  This time around, it is more widespread and it appears to be hitting the population with a fury.  A feverish, achy, take a couple days off and you will be fine fury.  You may get it and you may not, but unless you are at risk from any other virus; it isn’t anything to really worry about.

If you have a fever and it rises over 102, it’s time to go get treatment; regardless of the cause of the fever itself.  Health insurance or discount plans like Ameriplan will help with the cost, so don’t hesitate to go to the doctor if you find yourself in this situation.  Another warning sign that you may be at risk is if the symptoms are still getting worse after the fourth day.  Most people have had at least one strain of the flu in their lives, and it isn’t much fun; but the panic that is currently in the media is unfounded.  Over the course of 2009 we will most likely see this strain slow down and then resurge later in the year, and some people will die from it.  Given the choice though, swine flu is easier to deal with than the various other flu strains we see every other year.

Nathan asked:

There is a lot of anxiety among our society concerning the Swine Flu. It wouldn’t be my personal preference to catch the illness because it seems to give a hard swift punishment to the victim. This strain can carry morph into any one of the three strains of influenza. Pigs do carry influenza viruses and can adapt or morph in humans. The swine flu can also change to infect birds, causing the strain to switch genes and create a pandemic.

Like any type of new illness there are precautions people can take to prevent infection and the spread of the Swine Flu. It natural for people to cough directly into their hands. All the germs coming from the reparatory system are transported from the internal body and passed along to places, like car keys, door knobs, drinking fountains, and door handles. This can devastate the main population if one is carrying the actual Swine Flu. Create a habit of coughing into your shoulder or into your arm to minimize the spread of all germs and not just the Swine Flu.

At night it would be favorable to spray Lysol spray on light switches, toilet seats, toilet handles, freezer and fridge handles to kill the Swine flu and other bacteria. Lysol is a powerful deterrent to assist in the spread of germs, and illness. Pump bottles of hand sanitizer will help kill the germs on the surface of the skin and can assist in preventing the spread of the Swine flu. But there is a more advanced and preferred method to preventing the spread of Swine Flu.

We have been taught from an early age to wash our hands. Many take for granted the hand washing philosophy. The truth is that Lysol, hand sanitizer, coughing into the arm are all good ways but a good solid deep hand wash is the number one method for preventing the spread of germs. Hand sanitizer, and Lysol only kill the surface of where these items are applied. A deep hand wash bypasses the surface of the skin and really digs down to the grooves and pits of the hand. Ridges within the hand can be microscopic and hard to get reach for the Lysol, and hand sanitizer. A good hefty dose of liquid soap will grind down to the microscopic ridges and pours in the hand and do real damage to destroy the Swine Flu.

The swine flu is spreading at a rapid pace and raising concerns all over the society. The disease is epidemic- it doesn’t take time to diffuse from household to another and at the end dominates the entire region. There is uproar of panic all over. People are afraid of it and trying their best possible way to escape from it Swine flu. No one is willing to become the next victim. What if the correct measures are missed out and your child or you yourself adopt the unwanted infection?

Various pharmaceutical companies are offering vaccinations. The government is obliged to safe the citizens from the flu and thus imposing Quotas on imports from Mexico together with other infected regions. People anxious to save themselves are rushing to the pharmacies for medications, gathering best cleaning sprays for their households and so on. All this may go worthless if you don’t mind your own cleaning habits in time. There are essential easy steps to be taken in order to prevent the deadly Swine flu.

Firstly to be precautious it’s important you stay totally clean. What I mean by “totally clean” is not just taking shower accordingly and washing your hands after meals but to stay clean all the time. To wash your hands and face in repeated intervals with antibacterial cleanser which can easily be purchased from the nearest pharmacy. These are used at doctor chambers and there remains no doubt it will be effective for your safety. Together with it has the potential to clean your hands not only from the external surface but deeply digs the dirt. So using these hand wash to clean your hands for minimum of 50 to 60 seconds is the number one precaution.

Secondly, it is a typical case when you straightly cough or sneeze into your hands, avoiding using handkerchiefs. One should cough or sneeze into the arms or most flexibly use a tissue paper and throw way rather then utilizing your hands. Following this one should immediately wash hands if accidentally one has sneezed or coughed into the hands. This will prevent the Flu highly. The truth is germs travel in this simple procedure. It can be your computer mouse, door tab, car keys and the list is endless. It is also no rumor but a hard fact that Swine flu can be transferred form person-to-person. Yes, if you are the victim of it then it won’t be too late that your beloved daughter will accompany you if precaution are not taken. Ignore contact with your family members and outsiders if you are suffering from the flu- this expands the cases of scattering the disease in every corner.

Other than this you also need to remember to maintain a healthy diet in order to possess anti-protective immune system. Drink filtered water which doesn’t have the possibility to be infectious plus fresh vegetables.

Don’t just keep this to yourself but implement to carry out the exercise and protect your Family member form the Swine Flu at the earliest point. Is it not better to take prevention beforehand rather then suffering from it afterwards??
